Aloha, It is our pleasure to welcome you into the creative world of Sabado Art Studios! Under the guidance of veteran artist Phil Sabado, our studio and teachers are here to provide you and your keiki with a fun artistic learning outlet. In this informational newsletter you will find background history about our staff and their experiences as well as future programs we will be offering. Read on and enjoy! Artist: Phillip Sabado Philip Sabado was born and raised in Mauna Loa in the days when you walked barefoot in the plantation villages on the far West side of Molokai. A great deal of his youth was spent fishing, hunting in the rolling hills and mountains of Molokai. Born the youngest of twelve, he took an early interest in art, his mother aside extra income to afford his paper and paints. After serving in the army he began studying at the Honolulu Academy of Arts (a.k.a the Honolulu Museum of Art) to pursue his interest in design and painting. Currently, Sabado is working on commissions for Kaiser Hospitals and a number of hotels across the state of Hawai`i. 2017 Summer Program: Art Kauwela This summer Sabado Studios is proud to introduce a new six week creative learning experience led by our artist and teachers, Kumu Matt Agcolicol and Kumu Jessica Chung. The name Art Kauwela means “Summer of Art”, which is exactly what our instructors would like to provide the keiki of Maui with. With an outlined curriculum based around developing young creative minds to produce individual and collaborative work in a variety of mediums, our Kumus will guide students on an artistic journey this summer. Beginning on June 5, 2017 students will start off with learning the basic knowledge of drawing and painting. Further into the summer students will develop skills essential to practicing painting techniques. About half way through the summer students will receive the opportunity to embark on a excursion involving the nature and outdoors of Hawai`i. During this excursion students will learn how to plan a project from start to finish based on the knowledge they obtain about Hawai`i’s natural world. Also, included in our program will be a production of a collaborative class mural as well as mixed media projects. To top off the summer a private art show will be put on to showcase the works of all the young artists.
Artist/Kumu: Matthew Agcolicol Born and raise in Maui, Hi Matthew Agcolicol nurtured his aspirations of exploring the meanings of life through visual art. Inspired by the Hawaiian island’s diverse and complex ecosystems he creates paintings that reflect his interpretation of the natural world. A zen-like meditative element is found within his work that depict the harmonious reverberations of life. Agcolicol continues to transcend the surface of his canvas by discovering new concepts that question, spirituality, nature, and scientific findings. After acquiring his Bachelors in Fine Art at San Diego State University, College of Art and Design he returned to his island home Maui to continue his journey as an artist. Agcolicol has exhibited in numerous group and solo exhibitions in California and Hawaii while also extending his creativity in realms of product design for many start up companies while still making time to educate the youth of Maui.
